Getting to know FPRB Murtigading
The Disaster Risk Reduction Forum in Murtigading Village, or FPRB Murtigading, is located in Murtigading Village, Bantul Regency, DIY, with a population of approximately 8,425 (4,180 men and 4,245 women). Murtigading Village serves as a buffer village for several villages on the coast of the Indian Ocean in the event of an earthquake and tsunami. FPRB Murtigading was established by Decree of the Head of Murtigading Village, Kapanewon Sanden, Bantul Regency, Number 34 of 2022.
Innovation in Disaster Risk Reduction
Bantul Regency is an area prone to various disasters, namely earthquakes, landslides, building and residential fires, strong winds, tsunamis, forest and land fires, high waves, abrasion, and floods. In response to this, the community has developed an innovative solution, namely the Murtigading Mobile Public Kitchen, a kitchen that is easily accessible, inclusive and mobile. Public kitchens are a must in disaster-stricken areas. Public kitchens are very important in disaster response, but not all public kitchens are designed to be accessible, inclusive, and prioritise the elderly, people with disabilities, and other at-risk groups. The Murtigading Mobile Public Kitchen, or DUGEM for short, is the result of an innovation born out of concern for this issue. DUGEM has been successfully implemented in response to a maritime accident in Bantul, the celebration of the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day, and in support of the sustainability of public kitchens, especially in emergency situations or when there is a threat of disaster.
Priority Risk Groups
In carrying out its mobile kitchen mission, FPRB Murtigading has expanded its reach by prioritising the elderly, people with disabilities, women, children and other most at-risk groups in mapping out planning, surveys, findings, discussions and the creation of DUGEM. The most interesting aspect of this DUGEM innovation is the DUGEM framework that was created, which involved discussions not only with product design experts but also with at-risk groups. As a result, DUGEM ensures accessibility, enabling people in wheelchairs to cook and access its facilities directly.
DUGEM as a Model Public Kitchen
FPRB Murtigading believes that DUGEM innovations must not only meet standards, but also be accessible to all at-risk groups as operators and beneficiaries. In addition to its accessibility and inclusiveness, DUGEM is more than just a mobile kitchen that can be pulled by vehicles such as ambulances. DUGEM also pays attention to the nutritional needs of all. This is certainly new knowledge for the FPRB Murtigading group that during a disaster, the food served must be nutritionally balanced, healthy and pay attention to the amount of calories or nutrients and the proper way of serving.
DUGEM Menu Book as a Guide to Creating Nutritious Menus in Disaster Situations
Meeting the nutritional needs of at-risk groups is a priority, ensuring that proper cooking methods, calorie calculations, and food preparation are the basic rights of disaster survivors. Recognising this, DUGEM developed a menu book, designed in collaboration with at-risk groups and experts, including Tagana (Taruna Siaga Bencana). Murtigading has acquired the capacity from the menu book training to use it as a guide in creating DUGEM menus.
DUGEM, as an innovation from Murtigading, continues to strive for development in equipment operation, skilled human resources, and funding support from various stakeholders to ensure its sustainability in serving humanitarian needs.
