Safeguarding and Whistleblowing Training: Raising Awareness of IDEAKSI 2.0 Local Innovators in Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection

Yogyakarta - YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) conducted a Safeguarding and Whistleblowing Training for IDEAKSI 2.0 innovators in Yogyakarta on 27 June 2024. The training aimed to increase the understanding, awareness and ability of the local innovators in addressing the principles of protection to child and vulnerable adults in every humanitarian intervention.

Background and Training Objectives

YEU is a unit under the Christian Foundation for Public Health with core mandate on emergency response and disaster risk reduction, recognises the importance of protection towards children and vulnerable adults. With the support from Elrha, Start Network, and ADRRN (Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network) Tokyo Innovation Hub, YEU invited local innovators in the Safeguarding and Whistleblowing training emphasizing accessibility, accountability, and inclusion of at-risk groups.

This Safeguarding and Whistleblowing training was organised to ensure that innovators have a better understanding of YEU’s safeguarding policies and are able to apply these principles in any innovation activities. 

The objectives of this training are as follow:

  1. Increase innovators’ understanding and awareness on the principles of child and vulnerable adults safeguarding.

  2. Higher respect towards views, participation, and decisions that affect the lives of children and vulnerable adults.

  3. Prevent any form of action that contradicts these protection principles in the implementation of the IDEAKSI programme.

Participants and The Expected Outcomes

The training was attended by 30 innovators from various groups, namely Melati Women Farmer Group, Wanita Karya Women Farmer Group, Ngudi Makmur Farmer Group, Purwosari Millennial Farmers, Lumbung Pangan Artha Mandiri Group of Kemadang Javanese Christian Church, Centre for Empowerment of People of Disabilities (PPDMS), Prima Gadung Youth Organisation, Bonhargo, Murtigading Disaster Risk Reduction Forum, Pita Merah Jogja, Inclusion Theatre, Gempita Waste Bank, Luhur Jiwo Self-Help Group, Merapi Rescue Umbulharjo, and Unggul Jiwa Kelompok Swabantu. 

Each group was represented by two participants with diverse backgrounds, including women, men, older people and people with disabilities. As many as 3 participants were YEU staff who participated as part of staff capacity strengthening effort.

The result of this training was an increased knowledge from a total of 33 participants measured through pre-test and post-test, with the increase of 77.42% and the agreed safeguarding reporting mechanism between YEU, innovators and innovation beneficiaries.

YEU Commitment

YEU commits to continue supporting local innovators in implementing the principles of child and vulnerable adult protection. Through this training, innovators can be more responsible and proactive in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all parties. The training is also expected to have a positive impact on innovators and improve their disaster preparedness and response.
