The Interpersonal Communication Training was held on 18-20 December 2023 with Nona Poroe Utomo as the resource person. She is someone who is experienced in the field of communication and psychosocial. In addition, she has also worked at UNICEF in  Indonesia and several humanitarian organizations.

The training was aimed at enhancing the capacity of volunteers, especially members of disaster response teams in 5 villages regarding effective interpersonal communication. This activity engaged closely with representatives of 5 target villages and partners in Cianjur, such as the media, persons with disabilities organizations, local government, community health centers, and others.

The participants received materials related to interpersonal communication, including understanding, forms and types, communication objectives, and commonly used methods. Participants were also invited to practice interpersonal communication, through role playing, mapping challenges or difficulties faced, and finding solutions together to answer challenges in interpersonal communication. The practice was conducted several times for communication improvement. On the second day of the training, participants simulated how to deliver information or interpersonal communication in groups and followed by a joint evaluation. After attending the training, the participants gained better knowledge on how to communicate effectively, the impact of miscommunication, timing, language used, and the appropriate ways to convey interpersonal information.

The Interpersonal Communication training lasted for two days and was followed by training on the Communication Chain and HT Usage on the third day. This activity began with an explanation related to the communication chain in disaster emergency situations in Cianjur Regency by Wawan from the Cianjur Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). He gave an example when the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted a drought disaster in Cianjur Regency, the Cianjur Regent made a regulation to establish a drought emergency command post.

"The regulation is to be conveyed to the public, and alongside these efforts, preparations for handling the situation and equipment are necessary, which can collaborate with other local government organizations such as the Environmental Agency, Forestry Agency, Water Supply Company, Public Works Department, and Cianjur Regency Disaster Management Agency," he said.

Lastly, Wawan emphasized to the communities that Cianjur is located in a subduction zone and even West Java is on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which means it is included in disaster-prone areas to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

"So because it is located in the subduction zone beneath the Earth's crust, especially in the Cianjur area, frequent friction occurs resulting in small earthquakes. Therefore, with this training, the community must be part of disaster preparedness," he added.

Meanwhile, staff of  Cianjur Disaster Management Operation Control Center, Herman, added that related to information and communication in the context of disaster management in Cianjur Regency carried out by the operation control center regarding disaster situations and conditions, they are ready 24 hours a day to receive information from the communities through social media and other communication tools. They also provided systematic HT usage training to the participants and conducted simulations.

"At the central control of the Cianjur Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), we are on standby to handle disasters. We always receive and provide information about the situation and conditions in the Cianjur Regency 24 hours a day. It means we are vigilant and ready to go to the field based on reports and assessments from the communities that need to be carried out for handling and anticipation. Because Cianjur Regency is very prone to disasters according to its complete disaster potential, it is appropriate for all of us, not only the BPBD, to always improve preparedness and vigilance," he added.
